- When artificial intelligence probes the stars. Artificial intelligence designed by researchers at the University of Leeds in England has discovered thousands of stars that could provide us with valuable information about the formation of the Milky Way.
- Decipher the history of the galaxy through the protostars. The program made this discovery by analyzing images collected by the Gaia satellite. Launched in 2013 by the European Space Agency, it is tasked with designing a 3D map of the galaxy of unprecedented precision, comprising more than one billion celestial objects. The stars discovered by artificial intelligence are protostars, which are formed by a contraction of gas, and constitute an early stage in the process of star formation. For this reason, they have much to teach us about the history of the galaxy. About 100 of them had previously been listed by scientists: the discovery made by this artificial intelligence could therefore prove very rich in teaching.
- The use of artificial intelligence opens up many perspectives in astrophysics. It is particularly useful for navigating among the huge amounts of data collected by our observation equipment. Last year,researchers at the University of Texas discovered two exoplanets using a deep learning algorithm. Artificial intelligence is also an excellent tool for complex simulations, which is why researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have used this technique to better understand how galaxies evolve according to certain factors.
