Technology: The user experience is now an essential part of the success of an application, site or system, and AI can become a central element in improving it.

In terms of user experience in our systems, the less there is, the better. We are overwhelmed, to say the most, by demands and stimuli. Millions of apps, software and websites require our attention, and once we use a particular app, software or website, we are always bombarded with links and choices. Every day, every hour, every minute, it’s a fireworks display.

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers relief on this front. The AI-driven user experience can help turn an explosion of choice and information into a quiet river of information needed at any given time. And app and systems designers are interested.

AI can help create a personalized user experience

This is explained by Adyen’s product designer Joel van Bodegraven, along with other UX design experts, authors of a series of ebooks  that examine the impact of AI on UX design and how to design meaningful experiences in a context where products and services are based on AI. “Surrounded by misconceptions and questions about its purpose and power, in addition to its known ethical and philosophical challenges, AI can be the catalyst for great experiences for users,” he observes.

In the first book in the series, Joel van Bodegraven and Chris Duffey, Head of AI Strategy and Innovation at Adobe, discuss how AI affects design processes and the importance of data to deliver meaningful user experiences. For example, AI can “function as an assistant” by helping with research, data collection or more creative tasks. AI also captures data “to determine the best personal experience for an individual.”

AI can help design systems because it is able to “discover models and create new ones. More and more companies are relying on AI to design their systems to make them more consistent for users.”

Authors’ recommendations for a high-quality UX

With this in mind, here are the authors’ recommendations to take advantage of AI and design a superior user experience:

A minimum of interactions for maximum result. “We are bombarded with notifications, stimuli and expectations that we all have to manage in one way or another,” recall Joel van Bodegraven and Chris Duffey. “AI can solve this problem by doing the work for us. Think of delineated tasks that can be easily outsourced. Challenge yourself to solve important user problems with minimal intervention on their part.”

Inspire confidence. “It is important to gain the trust of the user by being transparent about what we know about him, and how we use this information. If possible, the user should have control and be able to change their data if necessary. »

Humanize experiences. “Google’s recent studies of how people interact with Google Home have brought out one thing. Users interact with the assistant as if it were a human being. For example, they will add “thank you” or “sorry” after a voice command. Individuals identify more with their device if it is represented by a character. »

Reduce choices. Yes, the user should be given less choice. “The current world, which is very efficient and too noisy, leaves very little time for users to be in the moment,” say Joel van Bodegraven and Chris Duffey. “Reduce possible choices by removing unnecessary proposals. The user will feel more space and therefore more freedom, and this may even allow to reveal things that we would not have thought of. »

The success of an application or system depends on the quality of its user experience, regardless of the advanced features and functions that are built into it. Simplicity is then the way to success in terms of application design, and AI can bring that simplicity.
